Tips for learning piano as an adult
As an adult, learning piano or any other musical instrument is not as difficult as one might think. Music instruments are often dismissed by many people since they believe that they are too old to learn them. This belief, however, is merely an excuse. It is never too late to learn, and you can learn the piano at any age. Consider the following tips.
Utilize your age to your advantage
Learn to play the piano as an adult by taking advantage of your age. People are most likely to learn an instrument while they are young, however, that is not necessarily an advantage, since children are often forced to learn an instrument, and they may not even enjoy it.
A musician who is learning an instrument as an adult, on the other hand, has the opportunity to choose what he or she wants to learn, and can use it as motivation to learn. If you are retired, or even if you have a modest income, or don't worry about finances as much as a young person would, you may have a little bit more time on your side.
You may devote whatever amount of time you want, you may hire a teacher, and you may choose how and what you wish to learn. Children often have difficulty paying attention and understanding certain concepts, but if you are truly motivated, learning the piano as an adult could be quicker.
Establish a specific goal for yourself
Having a goal in mind is essential when learning to play the piano for adults. The majority of adults learn best through project-based learning, unlike children, and as such, if you set yourself a goal, such as learning a particular song and playing it for someone, it is likely to be helpful to you.
You only need a piano, a bit of dedication, a song that you love, and you’re off on your musical journey before you even know it! Always set up milestones, goals, to keep your interest and motivation active!
Regular practice is preferable to long hours
In order to master something, it takes approximately 700 hours. For some it may be less, for others it may be more. Although, to learn how to play the piano at an older age, it is more important to practice regularly than to practice for hours on end.
If you are a beginner, we recommend you practice for 15 minutes five times a week. If you are able to devote more time to it, the better, but do not practice every week for several hours. Unfortunately, if you practice this way, you may feel burned out, especially if you have high expectations.
In learning a musical instrument, patience can be a great asset for adults. It is a virtue that comes with age, and it can be applied as a great advantage for adult learners. It is not talent that determines success, but consistency, and as such, repetitive practice is the key to mastering any skill. Identify the best time for you to practice the piano in accordance with your daily routine.
